Another someone who shouldn't be using a computer.
I get a call from a user who can't figure out how to dial in to our college on her Mac. She is currently using Earthlink dialup as her ISP and cannot access stuff on our intranet. I explain to her that she can only get to those things if she is at the college or if she dials into the college's network. I walk her through setting up a dial up connection.
After I finish she tells me that she doesn't understand how this is going to connect her to the stuff she needs. I explain to her that it will be just like when she dials to Earthlink only she will be connecting to us instead. The she tells me that she doesn't understand because she doesn't need her phone to connect to Earthlink. I think to myself for a minute, maybe she has DSL? Earthlink used to provide DSL. Or maybe she has cable? I ash her do you have DSL? She says no. I ask her do you have a cable modem? She says no. I ask her do you have Earthlink Dialup? She says yes. I ask her do you have to plug the phone line into the Mac to connect. She says yes. I then tell her then it's the same as with Earthlink. She says ok, but she doesn't need a phone to connect to Earthlink. I again asker if she has Dialup. She says yes. I tell her again that it will work the same way. It will connect to us over the phone just like it connects to Earthlink over the phone.
I explain to her a couple more times how she is going to connect to the college and that she should be able to get to what she needs once dialed in. she asks me a few more questions like what's a pdf and if once she is connected to the college, will she be able to open attachments that she couldn't open before. I answer all of them slowly and clearly.
Then she says to me that she is still not clear on how this is going to get her to what she needs. I ask her what exactly it is that she doesn't understand. She asks me if once she dials in if someone is going to answer and what she should tell them. I think about what she asked me for a few seconds, trying to decide if she really said what I think she said. I tell her that her computer is going to do all the dialing automatically, and that she will not have to use the phone to talk to anyone. I must note that at this point one of my coworkers who is hearing this conversation is ROFL. I spend a few more minutes assuring her that she will not have to use the phones handset to dial, and I again explain to her that it will work just like when she dials Earthlink, only she will be calling the college instead.
